At the beginning of second verse the pigeons all fly slowly back to the doveĀcote, which they enter; some immediately fall asleep, while others coo softly.
Sleep, Little Seedling, Sleep.
[Page74]
Characters and objects represented. Seeds, leaves, snowflakes, raindrops, wind, sunlight, and Spring. There can be as many seeds as desired in centre of ring, or all the children in ring not acting any other part can be seeds.
First Verse.
As the children sing the words, "Sleep, little seedling," the seeds all fall asleep by dropping their heads on upturned palms and closing their eyes. The leaves now come rustling gently along and go through the motions of covering the sleeping seeds. The leaves are followed by the Wind, who blows softly here and there upon the leaves as if lulling them to rest.
Second Verse.
The Sunlight now appears and pretends to throw sunbeams upon the seeds; the Sunlight in turn is followed by the snowflakes, who drop tiny bits of white paper here and there to represent snow. The raindrops now come with a patĀtering sound and scatter their silvery drops upon the seeds. But the seedlings sleep quietly on until Spring dances gaily into the ring with a wreath of flowers on her head and calls loudly, "Wake, little seedlings, wake!" The seeds on hearing Spring's call immediately wake and quickly rising lift their arms high to represent the growing plumes, or plants.
Song of Spring Birds.
